The TOLD-I, now in its fourth edition, is well-constructed, reliable, practical, research-based, and theoretically sound. Professionals can use the TOLD-I:4 to identify children ages 8-17.11 years who are significantly below their peers in oral language proficiency, determine their specific strengths and weaknesses in oral language skills, document their progress in remedial programs, and measure oral language in research studies.

Subtests and Composites

The TOLD-I:4 comprises six subtests that measure semantics (i.e., meaning and thought) or grammar (i.e., syntax and morphology) skills. Two subtests measure listening abilities, two measure organizing abilities, and two measure speaking abilities. The combination of all six subtests represents overall Spoken Language.

  • Sentence Combining—The examinee forms one compound or complex sentence from two or more simple sentences spoken by the examiner (i.e., grammar, speaking).
  • Picture Vocabulary—The examinee points to one picture (of six per card) that best represents a series of two-word stimuli (i.e., semantics, listening).
  • Word Ordering—The examinee forms a complete, correct sentence from a randomly-ordered string of words, ranging from three to seven words in length (i.e., grammar, organizing).
  • Relational Vocabulary—The examinee tells how three words spoken by the examiner are alike (i.e., semantics, organizing).
  • Morphological Comprehension—The examinee distinguishes between grammatically correct and incorrect sentences (i.e., grammar, listening).
  • Multiple Meanings—The examinee responds to a word spoken by the examiner by saying as many different meanings for that word as he or she can think of (i.e., semantics, speaking).

Features of the TOLD-I:4

  • All new normative data were collected from a demographically representative sample of the 2005 U.S. population.
  • Floor effects have been eliminated.
  • Study of item bias has been expanded.
  • Numerous validity studies, including studies of the test's sensitivity and specificity, have been provided.
  • A new composite (i.e., Organizing) has been included in the battery.
  • A new subtest (i.e., Multiple Meanings) representing the Semantics and Speaking constructs has been added.
  • The testing age range has been extended to include students between 13 and 17.11 years.
  • The Examiner's Manual has been streamlined to be more user-friendly.

TOLD-I:4 Scoring Software and Reporting System

This quick, efficient tool converts TOLD-I:4 subtest raw scores into age- and grade-based standard scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents; generates composite quotients; compares test scores to identify significant intra-individual differences (including up to five non-TOLD-I:4 scores); and provides a printed analytical report of the student's TOLD-I:4 performance. The software has a word processing interface with complete word processing functionality and provisions for storing examiner and testing information. It provides reports in RTF format for exporting to a wide variety of word processing programs and printing for both stand-alone and networked computers.
