The STAI provides clinicians with the ability to differentiate between the temporary condition of state anxiety and the more general and long-standing qualities of trait anxiety in adults. The State Anxiety scale evaluates feelings of apprehension, tension, nervousness, and worry, which increase in response to physical danger and psychological stress. The Trait Anxiety scale is ideal for screening high school and college students, military recruits, and others for anxiety problems and for evaluating the immediate and long-term outcome of psychotherapy, counseling, behavior modification, and drug treatment programs.
